Boston Scientific discloses 'global disruption' in ongoing cyberattack

Medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific announced on Wednesday that its global operations have been disrupted by an ongoing cyberattack, as revealed in a recent SEC filing. The "cybersecurity incident" targeting the company's IT systems began on Tuesday, causing a "global disruption to the company's operations." Upon discovering the intruders, Boston Scientific initiated an investigation with third-party information security experts to contain the threat.

However, the firm has not yet responded to inquiries regarding whether the attack involved ransomware, or if any data was stolen following the breach. The company stated that the incident has, and will continue to, disrupt and limit access to certain of its information systems and business applications, impacting aspects of its operations, such as the ability to process and ship customer orders.

Boston Scientific has not provided a timeline for a full restoration, and acknowledged that the "full scope, nature and impacts, including operational and financial impacts" of the cyberattack remain unknown. The announcement resulted in a more than 4% decline in the company's shares on Wednesday morning. Despite the lack of responsibility claims from known cybercrime groups, recent months have seen several other medtech firms face cyberattacks and data theft, including Stryker, Medtronic, and ShinyHunters.
