Barcelona still interested in Atletico’s Alvarez, says Laporta

Barcelona have expressed interest in signing Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, according to club president Joan Laporta. The 26-year-old Argentine, who helped his country win the 2022 World Cup, has been linked with a move to the LaLiga champions amid reports.

Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024, has been criticized by fans for his desire to leave the club. He even mentioned in a 2026 World Cup interview that he had spoken to Atletico about a possible transfer.

In a video posted on Barcelona's social media channels, Laporta clarified that the interest in Alvarez is not due to any actions taken by Barcelona, but because Atletico had stated that they were not selling the player. However, Laporta added that the club's interest remains until the end of the transfer window, should Atletico decide to sell.

Alvarez has made 107 appearances for Atletico Madrid since his move, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists. Despite the speculation, Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has stated that the club would not accept even €200 million (US$233 million) for Alvarez, who they intend to keep.

Atletico's stance has been met with criticism from some, who portray Alvarez as a victim in the situation. However, Atletico maintains that the player's departure, both financially and socially, is not about money, but about dignity.
