QB Tommy Castellanos commits to No. 12 Texas Tech with court-granted 5th season of eligibility

Lubbock, Texas - Quarterback Tommy Castellanos has officially committed to play his fifth and final season of college football for No. 12 Texas Tech, according to ESPN. The decision comes after Castellanos was granted a temporary restraining order by a Kentucky judge, allowing him to extend his college career beyond the four-year limit set by the NCAA.

Prior to this ruling, Castellanos had been a freshman at UCF in 2022 and had gone undrafted by the NFL. He had attempted to return to college football after being declared ineligible by Florida State University due to his gambling-related issues. Castellanos transferred to Florida State following two seasons at Boston College, where he played in 38 games, completing 477 of 816 passes for 6,449 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.

In his final season with the Seminoles, Castellanos was 180-for-309 (58.3%) for 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 12 games. Shoulders-to-shoulder with transfer receiver Will Hammond, Castellanos is set to be the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders as they begin their season against Abilene Christian on September 5.
