10-man Atletico snatch Villarreal draw as Alvarez returns

In Sunday's La Liga match, Atletico Madrid came away from a 2-2 draw with Villarreal despite having defender Robin Le Normand sent off. Gi Giuliano Simeone put his team in front with a penalty, following Marc Pubill's opener just before halftime. However, Villarreal equalized with another penalty in the second half, courtesy of Georges Mikautadze.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone brought on Julian Alvarez as a substitute, facing boos from home supporters. Upon leaving the tunnel, Julian Alvarez walked alone, while his teammates thanked the fans. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak stated, "It's not a comfortable situation for anyone, I hope it's resolved and we're all happy at the end of the season."

Simeone had started Alvarez on the bench, with fans booing his name when it was announced at the Metropolitano stadium. The Georgian forward, Ayoze Perez, came close to scoring for Villarreal in the first half, but goalkeeper Oblak blocked his shot. Atletico took the lead just before the hour mark when Pubill scored from long range.

Moreno equalized for Atletico from the penalty spot after Morten Hjulmand fouled Tajon Buchanan. With 12 minutes left, Villarreal regained the lead through Mikautadze's penalty, following Le Normand's dismissal. Alvarez came on for his first appearance of the season, to a chorus of boos. With five minutes remaining, Simeone's son Giuliano played a role in securing the draw.

Oblak made a crucial save from Buchanan as Villarreal narrowly missed out on claiming a third-place finish.
