US carrier Abraham Lincoln heads to Thailand

Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, the father of a U.S. Navy sailor currently serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln, was released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday, according to his family. Aviles Roa, a native of Nicaragua, had been arrested by federal immigration officials on Saturday for entering the country illegally.

The arrest received significant national attention as Aviles Roa's son, Joshua Aviles, shared his distress on social media, expressing concern for his father's well-being while serving on the aircraft carrier, which has faced reports of morale issues and poor conditions. Joshua Aviles wrote on Facebook that his father's only crime was bringing his siblings and him a better life in the U.S. Katty Delgado, Aviles' half-sister, confirmed to CBS News on Tuesday that ICE had released Aviles Roa, though the specifics of his release were not immediately disclosed.

This incident is part of a pattern of military families being affected by President Trump's relentless push for stricter immigration enforcement. Since the beginning of his administration, ICE has been deporting military spouses and parents at an increased rate, following the lifting of limitations on such arrests. Recently, ICE deported the wife of U.S. Army Sgt. Hedar Leonel Turcios Juarez to Honduras, citing that she had entered the U.S. illegally in 2016.
