US-Canada Trade War Erupts: Ottawa Hits $20 Billion Worth Of American Goods With Tariffs

Canada responded to the United States' imposition of tariffs on over $20 billion worth of Canadian goods on Tuesday, escalating a trade war between the two nations. The retaliation targeted a wide range of products, from steel and dairy to seafood and clothing, with tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the U.S. of seeking to undermine Canada's key industries, stating that American demands during the failed negotiations indicated a desire to "destroy our major industries."

The new tariffs, to take effect on September 8, will affect more than 700 products, including pulp and paper, electronics, and auto parts. Canadian officials emphasized that the goal is not to generate revenue but to safeguard Canadian businesses and reduce U.S. imports. US steel imports have already declined by 30 percent since the initial 25 percent tariff, with the new 50 percent rate expected to further reduce them.

The tariffs will impact businesses such as furniture maker Michael Howard II, who expressed concern over the economic consequences for his family and community. Carney stated that Canada may consider more targeted retaliation to protect workers and industries, rejecting the notion that certain protections, like French-language content, are negotiable.
