Canada hits back at US with retaliatory tariffs as trade war escalates

Canadian officials announced plans to impose $20 billion worth of tariffs on US goods, in response to new levies imposed by the United States. These tariffs will largely mirror those of the Trump administration, with the most significant impact on steel and aluminum. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that Canada's decision is a response to the US asking too much while offering too little.

This move puts pressure on congressional Republicans in states bordering Canada, who are already facing criticism for rising prices ahead of midterm elections. Blake Harden, a former GOP trade counsel, noted that this could be problematic for Midwestern and northern states reliant on the auto industry or Canadian tourism. Ontario Premier Doug Ford had previously suggested additional surcharges on electricity exports to the US, which could be particularly damaging to states like Maine, where Senator Susan Collins is in a tight re-election race.

While national voters are already dealing with higher energy and technology costs, they may be more sensitive to additional price increases. Canada has allocated $7.5 billion in aid to companies affected by the trade war, indicating their intention to engage in a prolonged conflict. However, these tariffs won't be implemented until September 8, providing some time for negotiations to resume. This development creates an opportunity for both governments to restart discussions.
