Trump threatens to change Lake Ontario's name as trade war with Canada heats up

President Trump has threatened to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" due to escalating trade tensions with Canada. The U.S. president said in a post on Truth Social that the country no longer expects significant business with Ontario. The threats are part of a growing trade spat, following the imposition of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods by the U.S. after failed negotiations.

The conflict escalated when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs, and Trump vowed to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian automotive and steel imports from January. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also criticized Trump, calling him a "loser" and a "dictator", vowing to fight. This is not the first time Trump has threatened to make Canada the 51st U.S. state, nor his repeated disputes with Canadian leaders over trade, NATO, and a Detroit-area bridge dispute.
