Canada to respond to Trump’s new tariffs – US politics live

Tariffs on various Canadian goods went into effect over the weekend as President Trump threatened additional measures on automobiles and trucks. Democratic and Republican politicians alike have urged the administration to prevent American citizens and businesses from aiding Chinese and Russian civilian intelligence and security agencies, according to Reuters.

In 2018, Congress passed a law prohibiting Americans from providing assistance to foreign military intelligence agencies, though it left the door open for such support to civilian organizations. In 2019, Reuters disclosed that the United Arab Emirates had enlisted more than a dozen former U.S. intelligence operatives to spy on dissidents, journalists, and Americans.

In South Carolina's Republican primary runoff, Darline Graham and Ralph Norman are set to face off once again to fill the late Lindsey Graham's Senate seat. Graham's sister, Darline, is a political newcomer who has struggled to establish herself among voters who typically support her brother. Norman has emphasized his experience in state and federal government.

Oklahoma Governor Mike Mazzei, backed by Trump, is in a tight race against state Attorney General Gentner Drummond, while Tulsa businessman Mazzei has harshly criticized Drummond. The Supreme Court has sided with the Trump administration in a case concerning the president's executive order limiting mail-in voting, though it remains uncertain how much of the order can be enforced before the upcoming midterm elections.

The U.S. Postal Service recently outlined its plan for carrying out the order, but there is limited time to make significant adjustments. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly congratulated Ukraine on its independence day via the social media platform X, stating: "Let us seize this moment to end the conflict and build a durable, lasting peace that unleashes the tremendous potential of Ukraine for generations to come."

Zelenskyy noted on Sunday that Ukraine is receiving significantly fewer Patriot defense systems, despite an uptick in Russian ballistic assaults.
