SNAPSHOT | Cabinet to discuss proposed Felda audit - Anwar; Indonesia acts against companies over haze

The proposal for a forensic audit into alleged misconduct at the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) will be brought before the cabinet for discussion, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced today. The Prime Minister made this statement after meeting with reporters following the national-level Maulidur Rasul celebration. Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously called for such an audit, emphasizing that any suspected abuse of power, breach of trust, or governance failures must be thoroughly investigated.

If strong evidence is found, those responsible for wrongdoing should be brought to court, though Zahid Hamidi cautioned against using investigations to humiliate individuals. Anwar had previously revealed that Felda is burdened with nearly RM10 billion in debts and losses due to years of management failures and excessive political interference.

The once-leading plantation organization once generated significant profits, but its financial situation has since deteriorated, with the government currently paying RM980 million annually to cover Felda's financial obligations stemming from losses incurred under its previous management. Anwar disclosed that a task force has commenced its investigation into Felda's management, with the intention of examining the organization's past problems, current management, and future direction. The task force's findings will be made public upon completion.
