Ramkarpal calls for inquest into death of 14-year-old student

Former deputy minister Ramkarpal Singh has called for a public inquest into the death of a 14-year-old student in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur on August 18. The youngster's mother claimed her daughter had reported being bullied, suggesting the death may have been linked to harassment. Ramkarpal pointed to previous cases of fatalities or serious injuries resulting from bullying, including the deaths of T Nhaveen in 2017 and Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain in the same year.

He also cited the brutal assault of a Sarawak schoolgirl in April 2014. "Every effort should be taken to prevent such incidents from occurring again," Ramkarpal stated. "This is a matter of public interest, and I urge Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus to confirm whether an inquest will be conducted." Earlier, Fadil confirmed that a 51-year-old man, the boyfriend of the deceased girl's mother, had been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting the older sister.

The arrest occurred while police were probing possible harassment related to the teenager's death. The girl was airlifted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital after her mother called 999 from their residence on Jalan Langkawi. She succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical care. Police launched a criminal investigation after receiving a report from the mother on August 19 and have since gathered over 90 statements.
