Man United's Fernandes named PFA Player of the Year

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City's Khadija "Bunny" Shaw were named the top men's and women's players in English soccer for last season. The awards were given out at the Professional Footballers' Association ceremony on Tuesday. Fernandes, who captained Manchester United, repeated his win from May by receiving the most votes from the Football Writers' Association.

Shaw, the Manchester City forward, also secured the top spot in her category. The Professional Footballers' Association awards are decided by fellow players, making the honors a significant achievement for both players. Fernandes set a new Premier League record with 21 assists, surpassing the previous mark set by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

He also scored nine goals as Manchester United climbed out of a difficult start to the season under interim coach Michael Carrick. Shaw led Manchester City to their first Women's Super League title in a decade, scoring 19 goals in 21 games. She has won the PFA women's player award three years in a row. Young players Nico O'Reilly of Manchester City and Olivia Smith of Arsenal were also recognized with awards.

Smith won the PFA award for a second straight season, following a world record transfer from Liverpool.
