Landtagswahl: Was Sie zur Landtagswahl in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wissen sollten

On September 20, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will elect a new Landtag. During the election campaign, topics such as economy, bureaucracy reduction, internal security, health, education, migration, and asylum dominate. To determine which party best aligns with your stance, utilize the Election-O-Mat, an online tool that compares your position with the positions of the parties running for the election.

The tool also allows you to compare your responses with those of the parties. The Wahl-O-Mat is developed by an independent team consisting of young voters, experts from academia, journalism, and education, and employees of the Federal Center for Political Education (bpb). They submit 80 theses to the Landtag-eligible parties for response.

Out of these, 38 are selected for the Wahl-O-Mat, addressing important issues and receiving controversial answers from the parties. The parties are not involved in the creation or selection of the theses; they only provide their responses and justifications. All eligible parties for the Landtag election are invited to participate.

The Election-O-Mat is managed by the Federal Center for Political Education, a federal agency under the Ministry of the Interior. Its goal is to promote democratic awareness among the population and encourage active and critical participation in politics.

The bpb was established in 1952 and operates under an order from the Federal Interior Ministry. The Federal Center for Political Education has a politically balanced staff, overseen by a committee of 22 members from the German Bundestag, and supported by a scientific advisory board of up to twelve experts. The Election-O-Mat has been available since 2002, providing current information before state and federal elections as well as European Parliament elections.

The Landtag election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is on Sunday, September 20. Polling stations will be open from 8 to 18 hours. For those unable to vote in person, there is an option for postal voting. Other tools to consider alongside the Election-O-Mat include Party-Check, which assesses alignment with parties based on 15-20 questions, and WahlSwiper, which uses swiping gestures to determine agreement with parties' positions.

As of July 30, 2025, 19 parties are permitted to participate in the Landtag election. These include the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), the Party of Progress (PdF), the WIR LEBEN DEMOKRATIE (WLD), the PARTIE MENSCH KLIMA TIERSCHUTZ (Tierschutzpartei), the Pirate Party, the Handwerker Partei, Volt, Team Freiheit, Bündnis C – Christen für Deutschland, Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht – Vernunft und Gerechtigkeit (BSW), Freie Wähler, the Party, and Ökologisch-Demokratische Partei (ÖDP).

The new Landtag convenes for its first session after the election, marking it as the ninth Landtag in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with elections occurring every five years. The electoral district is divided into 36 constituencies, and the current legislature consists of 79 members representing five factions or groups, with the remaining four being independent.
