Lagos: Nigerian govt targets 24-month completion of Carter Bridge reconstruction

The Nigerian government has set its sights on finishing the reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos within 24 months, down from the originally planned 36 months. Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi made the announcement during an inspection tour of the Carter and Iddo Bridge projects in Lagos, alongside the Minister of State for Works, Senator Mohammed Goronyo, and members of the National Assembly.

Umahi highlighted the bridge's critical role in Lagos' transportation network and the bridge's age, having served the city for over six decades without proper maintenance. According to Umahi, the bridge's structural integrity has been compromised, with significant deterioration due to years of neglect, detached piles, extensive rust, scouring, and illegal sand mining.

To address these issues, the government has designed a new Carter Bridge that incorporates innovative engineering features to improve traffic flow and enhance structural strength. The redesigned bridge will include additional ramps to reduce congestion, an elevated carriageway, and a cable-stayed section for navigation clearance.

The Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) has completed around 15% of the preliminary work, including establishing a project yard and constructing access roads. Piling activities are expected to begin shortly. Umahi emphasized that partial closure of the bridge is not an option due to its importance to Lagos' transportation system.

The government is implementing a similar strategy for the Third Mainland Bridge, where rehabilitation work aims to extend its lifespan by another 50 years. Umahi expressed confidence that the new Carter Bridge will remain functional for over a century, citing the additional protective measures incorporated into its design.
