Interior Ministry introduces TraffiTech to track and penalise road traffic offenders

The Interior Ministry of Ghana has launched the TraffiTech-GH system to monitor and penalize motorists for violating traffic regulations. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak unveiled this initiative at a Government Accountability Series on August 24. The TraffiTech-GH system employs surveillance cameras and other monitoring devices mounted on major roads to detect traffic violations.

Once a violation is detected, evidence is transmitted to a centralized control room for verification. Subsequently, an electronic notice detailing the offense, penalty, and payment process is sent to the offender via their mobile phone. Failing to pay the fines will lead to the authorities tracing the offender and potentially arresting them.

The TraffiTech system aims to enforce traffic regulations, discourage reckless driving, and reduce road crashes and fatalities. This automated enforcement system, developed by the Ghana Police Service, covers over 47 traffic offenses. Motorists are required to settle their fines electronically within 14 days through the Ghana.gov platform.

By minimizing direct interactions between motorists and police officers, the TraffiTech system aims to reduce roadside disputes and manual handling of traffic fines.
