Ministry of Interior introduces digital system to check road traffic violations

Ghana's Ministry of Interior plans to introduce a digital system, called TraffiTech-GH, to combat road traffic violations in the country. This technology-driven system will be implemented in September 2026 and will allow police to monitor traffic activities remotely. Cameras and other digital devices will capture violations, with footage reviewed at a central control room for enforcement.

Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Terlabi, stated that this initiative aims to minimize human contact during traffic enforcement and increase the efficiency of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD). Mr Terlabi explained that the police control room will oversee road activities, reducing the need for police officers to be present at traffic stops and potentially minimizing traffic congestion.

However, he emphasized that the new system does not weaken the police's authority or replace their responsibilities. Under TraffiTech-GH, motorists will receive electronic notifications outlining their violations, applicable penalties, and payment processes. The system is expected to cover over 47 traffic offences. The government hopes that this move will reduce opportunities for corruption by limiting direct interactions between motorists and police officers during traffic enforcement.
