Infrastructure SA to tackle failing municipal projects: Zikalala

Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) is set to tackle failing municipal projects, according to Deputy Minister of Public Works Sihle Zikalala. Speaking at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium, Zikalala emphasized the importance of addressing collapsing infrastructure projects at the municipal level. He urged South Africans to collaborate in expediting the implementation of all infrastructure projects.

Zikalala highlighted that government is partnering with the private sector to drive development, and he called on citizens to contribute to service payments for infrastructure maintenance. While the focus initially was on national infrastructure projects, ISA is now addressing technical shortages at the municipal level that are impacting projects and maintenance.

Zikalala explained that the technical capacity of local municipalities has been eroded, leading to a serious problem of skilled personnel leaving. This decay in the administrative system has created a significant challenge. Through ISA, efforts are being made to build the technical capacity of municipalities to overcome these obstacles.
