Indonesia's Palm Oil Could Meet 60% of Global Vegetable Oil Demand by 2050

Indonesia's palm oil industry is poised to meet approximately 60% of global vegetable oil demand by 2050, according to a report by the Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (Paspi). Driven by population growth, rising incomes, and global industrialization, global vegetable oil demand is projected to reach 300 million tons by 2050, a nearly 1.4 times increase from the estimated 215.6 million tons in 2025.

The majority of this demand will be met by palm oil, which currently accounts for 41.4% of world production despite being cultivated on only 29 million hectares of land. This high productivity is attributed to palm oil's ability to produce eight to ten times more oil than other major vegetable oils and its potential to increase productivity by another 50 to 100% through improved plantation practices and technological innovation.

Unlike other vegetable oils, palm oil also offers stable year-round supply, competitive pricing, and the involvement of smallholder farmers who contribute 42% of the sector. Experts recommend prioritizing the enhancement of palm oil productivity through strategies such as replanting superior varieties and improving existing plantations using Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and innovative cultivation techniques.
