India Approves Transfer Of DRDO Missile Technologies To Defence Industry In Major Boost To Manufacturing Sector: Why Is This A Big Deal?

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has greenlit the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian businesses, a move that could lead to the domestic production of these weapons. The Ministry of Defence announced the decision was taken to bolster the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy in the defence industry.

Under the new framework, Indian defence firms can now manufacture DRDO-developed conventional missile systems within the nation, provided they meet the necessary qualifications, certifications, and regulatory criteria. This step is expected to move the development of missile systems from the laboratory phase to industrial-scale manufacturing, enabling the domestic defence sector, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to actively participate in production and the broader supply chain.

The approval is a significant stride towards the government's goal of boosting defence capabilities through domestic production.
