Kuwait grapples with US presence amid Iran war

Kuwaiti resident Ghanim Alsulaimani recalls the liberation of his country from Iraqi invasion by US troops decades ago. Now, in the midst of the US-Iran conflict, some Kuwaitis view the American forces as a burden rather than a blessing, as their presence has made Kuwait a target. Iran has bombarded Kuwait with attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, such as water desalination plants and energy installations, as well as bases housing US troops.

Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz has put Kuwait in a tough economic situation, relying heavily on oil exports for revenue. Iran aims to use Kuwait as a battlefield to pressure the US to cease its attacks, but US President Donald Trump remains unphased. While many Kuwaitis still support the US, some privately express concerns about the impact on their nation, questioning the necessity of foreign troops in their country.
