IKEA picks Kuching for first-ever small store format in Malaysia, eyes December opening

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — IKEA Malaysia has announced its first store in East Malaysia will open in Kuching in December, expanding its presence in Sarawak beyond e-commerce and delivery. This will be IKEA's first small-format store, complementing its existing e-commerce and fulfilment operations in the region. The new IKEA Kuching location will be the fifth physical store in Malaysia, joining outlets in Damansara, Cheras, Tebrau, and Batu Kawan.

Unlike larger IKEA stores, Kuching's outlet will follow a compact format, catering to convenience with rooms and home furnishing options, and allowing customers to purchase select items on the same day. IKEA Malaysia's country retail director, Malcolm Pruys, expressed excitement about catering to Sarawak's customers, stating that the store will bring the company closer to its goal of enhancing everyday life for many.

IKEA Malaysia is also starting to build its local workforce in Kuching, prioritizing opportunities for local talent as part of the opening preparations.
