IKEA picks Kuching for first-ever small store format in Malaysia, eyes December opening

IKEA Malaysia has announced plans to open its first small-format store in Kuching, East Malaysia, in December. This marks a significant expansion into Sarawak, where the company has previously only provided services through e-commerce and delivery. The new IKEA Kuching store will be the retailer's fifth physical location in Malaysia, joining outlets in Damansara, Cheras, Tebrau, and Batu Kawan.

Unlike IKEA's larger stores, the Kuching outlet will follow a small-format concept aimed at convenience. Customers will have the opportunity to browse room settings and home furnishing solutions, with the ability to take select products home the same day. However, shoppers will still have access to the full IKEA catalogue for purchase, though not everything may be available for immediate pickup.

Malcolm Pruys, IKEA Malaysia's country retail director, expressed excitement about the new store, stating that it will bring the IKEA experience closer to Sarawak's residents by making it more accessible and relevant to their home living situations. The company is also beginning to build its local team in preparation for the opening, with a focus on employing and growing local talent.
