Google Expands Gemini Enterprise AI Platform for Law Firms, Lawyers

Alphabet's Google has expanded its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform to include new tools specifically designed for lawyers and law firms, according to a report on August 25. The company aims to capitalize on the growing demand for AI solutions within the legal sector. Gemini Enterprise for Legal enables law firms to leverage AI to handle both routine and complex tasks, thereby allowing legal professionals to focus on higher-value services while ensuring their data remains secure and confidential.

The new plug-in for Gemini Enterprise features integration with legal software and data platforms, as well as a suite of AI agents capable of handling specialized legal and administrative functions with minimal human oversight. Alphabet launched Gemini Enterprise for business customers in October, attempting to attract more corporate clients to its AI offerings. Google Cloud has emerged as one of Alphabet's fastest-growing businesses.

In addition to legal applications, Google announced industry tools for the financial services sector and plans to roll out other industry-specific offerings. Rival AI companies, such as Anthropic, have also been expanding their enterprise offerings, particularly in the legal sector. A 2026 report by Deloitte noted that law firms are heavily investing in AI technology as part of a transformation that is still in its early stages.

Thomson Reuters, which owns Reuters and the Westlaw legal research database, is a competitor for market share in the legal industry. The company recently launched a proprietary large language model called Thomson 1.0, trained on its legal research content and designed for professional work. Thomson Reuters will allow Google's platform to connect directly and securely to other legal technology platforms, including those owned by Thomson Reuters, legal AI software developers Harvey and Legora, and others.

Google's new offering is designed to be flexible for law firms, according to Amrita Mehrok, a Google Cloud product director. This allows law firms to choose among AI models embedded in the platform. Notable large law firms, such as Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly, have formed strategic partnerships with Google on Gemini Enterprise for Legal. These collaborations aim to create useful tools for law firms deploying AI technology.
