Google expands Gemini AI platform for law firms, lawyers

Alphabet's Google has unveiled an expansion of its Gemini Enterprise AI platform, specifically tailored for law firms and legal professionals. The new tools aim to streamline routine and complex legal work, allowing lawyers to focus on higher-value services while ensuring data security and confidentiality. Google's Gemini Enterprise for Legal includes integration with legal software and data platforms, as well as a suite of AI agents capable of handling specialized legal and administrative functions with minimal human oversight.

The launch of Gemini Enterprise for Legal follows Google's entry into the AI market with its Gemini Enterprise platform for businesses in October. Google Cloud has emerged as one of Alphabet's fastest-growing businesses, and the company plans to introduce industry-specific tools for the financial services sector in the near future.

Rival AI companies, such as Anthropic, have also been expanding their enterprise offerings, including in the legal sector. In a 2026 report on the legal industry's adoption of AI, Deloitte found that law firms are heavily investing in the technology as they undergo a transformation that is still in its early stages. Thomson Reuters, which owns Reuters and Westlaw's legal research database, is also a competitor in the legal industry market.

Google's platform will connect directly and securely to other legal technology platforms owned by Thomson Reuters, Harvey, LexisNexis, and other firms. Some large law firms, including Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly, have formed strategic partnerships with AI providers and are building their own AI platforms.

Notable law firms, such as Weil Gotshal's co-managing partner Jonathon Soler and Cleary Gottlieb's managing partner Jeffrey Karpf, are collaborating with Google on Gemini Enterprise for Legal, as clients increasingly expect their lawyers to utilize AI and its efficiency benefits.
