Google expands Gemini AI platform for law firms, lawyers

Alphabet's Google has expanded its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform to cater specifically to the needs of law firms and legal professionals, intensifying the competition among tech firms to cater to the legal sector's growing demand for AI solutions. The new Gemini Enterprise for Legal aims to streamline both mundane and intricate legal work, enabling lawyers to concentrate on more high-value tasks while maintaining the secure and confidential handling of their data.

The platform integrates seamlessly with legal software and data management systems and features a suite of AI agents capable of tackling specialized legal and administrative duties without extensive human intervention.

In October, Alphabet had introduced Gemini Enterprise for business clients as a strategy to broaden its AI offerings to corporate customers. Google Cloud has emerged as one of the fastest-growing units within Alphabet. On top of legal applications, Google announced on Tuesday the development of industry-specific tools for the financial services sector, with more industry-focused solutions slated for future rollout.

Similar to Google, other AI firms such as Anthropic are also broadening their enterprise offerings, notably in the legal domain. The Deloitte report from 2026 underscored that law firms are heavily investing in AI as part of a transformation process that is still in its early stages. Thomson Reuters, the owner of Reuters and Westlaw's legal research platform, is among the competitors vying for a larger share in the legal industry.

On Monday, they unveiled Thomson 1.0, a proprietary large language model fine-tuned on their legal research content and engineered for professional use. This model leverages open-source technology alongside decades of authoritative legal content generated by Thomson Reuters.

Google's offering is designed to be highly adaptable, catering to the unique needs of various law firms, according to Amrita Mehrok, a product director at Google Cloud. The platform offers the flexibility for law firms to pick from a range of AI models embedded within it. Several prominent law firms, including Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly, are engaged in a collaborative effort with Google on Gemini Enterprise for Legal.

Notably, Weil Gotshal's co-managing partner, Jonathon Soler, highlighted the growing expectation among clients that their legal representatives should be leveraging AI to enhance efficiencies. Similarly, Cleary Gottlieb's managing partner, Jeffrey Karpf, expressed enthusiasm about the firm's partnership with Google to contribute to the development of practical AI tools for law firms utilizing AI technologies.
