Google expands Gemini AI platform for law firms, lawyers

On August 25, Alphabet's Google introduced expanded capabilities of its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform specifically for law firms and legal professionals, intensifying competition among tech firms to cater to the growing demand for AI in the legal sector. The new Gemini Enterprise for Legal tool aims to streamline routine and intricate legal work, enabling lawyers to concentrate on higher-value services, while safeguarding their data.

The integration with various legal software and platforms, along with AI agents capable of handling specialized legal and administrative tasks, eliminates the need for extensive human intervention.

Alphabet launched Gemini Enterprise in October, targeting corporate clients with its AI offerings. Google Cloud has emerged as one of Alphabet's fastest-growing businesses. The company has also begun unveiling industry-specific tools, including financial services, with plans for more offerings in the future. Competitors like Anthropic have also expanded their enterprise AI solutions, including in the legal domain.

A 2026 Deloitte report revealed that law firms are significantly investing in AI technology as part of a transformation that is still in its infancy.

In a bid to attract clients, several large law firms have formed strategic partnerships with AI providers and even built their own AI platforms. Notable law firms collaborating with Google on Gemini Enterprise for Legal include Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly. Weil Gotshal's co-managing partner, Jonathon Soler, highlighted that clients are increasingly expecting lawyers to leverage AI for improved efficiency.

Cleary Gottlieb's managing partner, Jeffrey Karpf, expressed his firm's enthusiasm for collaborating with Google to create useful tools for AI adoption in the legal sector.
