Golf brand Callaway apologizes for ad showing woman being shoved to ground

Golf equipment manufacturer Callaway has issued an apology for an advertisement that showed its co-founder Garrett Clark shoving a woman to the ground. The ad, released in partnership with Good Good Golf, depicted Clark charging towards professional golfer Alexis Miestowski, pushing her to the ground and threateningly stating, “Do not touch my new driver,” after she reached for his golf bag.

Callaway CEO Chip Brewer issued a statement acknowledging the company's mistake and expressing deep regret for the inappropriate content. He emphasized that the ad did not align with the company's values of diversity and inclusion, and firmly stated that the company is unequivocally against discrimination, domestic violence, and threatening behavior of any kind.

The statement also mentioned that Callaway has implemented changes to its approval processes and is conducting internal and external investigations to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Good Good Golf, the brand partner in the advertisement, also apologized for the content, stating that it depicted actions inconsistent with the brand's mission of inclusivity.

The golf content creator, whose channel has gained popularity among young recreational golfers, had received $45 million in funding from an investor consortium earlier this year. The controversy surrounding the advertisement has raised questions about the portrayal of violence against women in sports marketing and the responsibility of companies to ensure their promotional materials align with ethical standards.
