France: Tornado ravages small village

A powerful tornado struck the southwestern French village of Pomas on Monday, leaving 41 people injured and damaging roughly 300 homes according to local authorities. The storm caused widespread disruption, triggering orange alerts for storms across the southwestern region of France. In addition to numerous power outages, transport networks experienced significant delays and closures due to debris and damage.

The Vuelta a Espana cycling race, which was underway in the area, was abruptly halted when a sudden hailstorm forced competitors to take cover.

The hardest-hit village was Pomas, home to just 1,000 residents. The tornado uprooted roofs and left a trail of destruction through the community. Over 120 emergency responders, including firefighters and medical personnel, rushed to assist the victims. Fifteen injured individuals, including a pregnant woman who suffered when her dwelling collapsed upon her, were transported to local hospitals.

Meteo-France, France's national weather service, reported wind speeds reaching up to 117 kilometers per hour in the nearby village of Arquettes-en-Val. The tornado's impact extended beyond Pomas, disrupting transportation across southern France and causing delays at major airports including Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, and Paris. Authorities estimated that 2,800 homes throughout 10 villages were left without electricity.

While France experiences several dozen tornadoes annually on average, experts with Meteo-France are still investigating whether climate change is influencing their frequency and severity.
