Eid-el-Maulud: Nigerians are tired of promises, CAN urges good governance

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged Nigerians to embrace mercy, compassion, justice, and peaceful coexistence as Muslims observe Eid-el-Maulud. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh made this appeal in a message, congratulating Muslims across Nigeria while praying for peace and blessings for their families and communities.

Okoh emphasized that the celebration of Prophet Muhammad's birth offered an opportunity for Muslims and Nigerians to reflect on the Prophet's values, such as mercy, justice, compassion for the less fortunate, honesty, and peaceful coexistence. He highlighted that these values are particularly important in Nigeria today, given the challenges of rising living costs and insecurity.

Okoh expressed frustration that Nigerians are "tired of promises" and called on the government and leaders at all levels to move from empty promises to visible actions. He stressed that Nigerians require better security, economic relief, and leadership that prioritizes their welfare. Okoh also cautioned politicians against exploiting religious or ethnic differences for political gain, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging that elections should not divide the nation but strengthen its unity.

He urged Christians and Muslims to resist such attempts and emphasized that both groups bear the responsibility to protect their communities, care for vulnerable Nigerians, and work together for peace. Okoh expressed hope for Nigeria, but noted that this hope must be grounded in "responsible leadership, good citizenship, and justice." He wished Muslims a "Mubarak Eid-el-Maulud" and prayed for God's blessings upon Nigeria.
