Dodgers' Promising Pitcher Wins Award Following Triple-A Demotion

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Emmet Sheehan returned to Triple-A after a short MLB appearance, earning the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week accolade following his impressive comeback. The team originally deployed Sheehan to the minors at the start of the month following their acquisition of All-Star ace Tarik Skubal during the trade deadline.

They promoted him back to the majors after Edwin Diaz was placed on the injured list, but Sheehan didn't pitch before being sent back down on Friday. In his lone start of the week for Triple-A Oklahoma City, Sheehan showcased a stellar outing in his second start of the year, facing only one hit over six innings and striking out nine batters while walking just two.

The right-hander's exceptional performance serves as a morale booster after his recent demotion and he aims to build on this momentum as he strives for an MLB return this season. This was Sheehan's third Triple-A appearance of the season, with the prior two taking place on August 8 and August 12. His first outing lasted only 0.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, but he rebounded with a solid start four days later, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings and striking out eight against the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Overall, Sheehan has a 1.46 ERA across his three outings in Triple-A, striking out 17 batters over 12.1 innings pitched. In the majors, Sheehan maintained a 5.29 ERA over 20 starts with the Dodgers, allowing 20 home runs, which surpasses his entire MLB career total prior to 2026. While Sheehan's results are encouraging for his confidence, the likelihood of him returning to the Dodgers' rotation this season is slim.

The right-hander is undoubtedly a quality pitcher, but the Dodgers' already formidable rotation is particularly challenging to crack, especially with their returning stars. Cy Young winners Blake Snell and Tarik Skubal, World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, emerging star Roki Sasaki, All-Star Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani are all vying for spots in the rotation, with Ohtani set to return from the injured list on Tuesday.

Sheehan's path back to MLB is uncertain, but his recent performance suggests he could make his way back to the big leagues eventually.
