80 Mile’s Italian biodiesel plant gets sustainability certifications

80 Mile PLC's Ferrandina biodiesel plant in Italy has earned notable sustainability certifications, according to a recent announcement. The facility, operated by Greenswitch S.r.l., obtained both the Italian National Sustainability Certification Scheme and International Sustainability and Carbon Certification accreditations. These certifications affirm that the plant's biodiesel products meet stringent sustainability, traceability, and greenhouse gas emissions-reduction standards mandated by Italian and European Union regulations.

The dual certification allows the plant's biodiesel to qualify for "double counting" treatment under the Italian biodiesel obligation system and the Certificati di Immissione in Consumo regime managed by the GSE. Typically, biodiesels with double-counting status command a price premium of €300-500 per tonne, contingent on factors such as feedstock, greenhouse gas savings, and prevailing certificate prices.

The ISCC certification verifies adherence to EU sustainability, traceability, and emissions-saving criteria, while INS is the national Italian sustainability certification scheme for biodiesel and bioliquids, relevant to eligibility for Italian double-counting treatment. Mark Frascogna, Managing Director of Hydrogen Valley, stated that securing both INS and ISCC certifications validates the team's hard work.

The Ferrandina plant, situated in Basilicata, southern Italy, near the Port of Taranto, is currently in the final maintenance phase before commencing commercial production of biodiesel and other renewable fuels. 80 Mile, an exploration and development company with projects in Greenland, Finland, and Italy, is listed on the London AIM market, Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and U.S. OTC Market.
