We will vet Mahama Ayariga fearlessly – Minority Leader

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has assured Parliament's Minority that they will scrutinize the nomination of outgoing Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga with utmost thoroughness when he faces the Appointments Committee. Ayariga has been nominated for the position of Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.

During Parliament's emergency recall meeting on August 24, 2026, Afenyo-Markin expressed the Minority's intention to conduct an unbiased examination of Ayariga's nomination. The Minority Leader emphasized that the nominee should show readiness to tackle the country's sanitation issues if they are approved for the role. Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for a sanitation policy to be enacted, as the current state of filth in the nation's cities and towns is unacceptable.

Despite his stern warning about rigorous scrutiny, Afenyo-Markin maintained a friendly tone as he reminisced about his friendship with Ayariga. He expressed his personal regret at Ayariga's departure and conveyed his respect for the outgoing Majority Leader. Afenyo-Markin assured the Speaker that their exchanges, which have sometimes been misunderstood by the media, were based on a genuine understanding of each other's intentions.
