Australia news live: Sydney trains plagued by morning cancellations due to ‘urgent’ repairs to overhead wires

Sydney commuters faced long lines for replacement buses on Tuesday morning due to train delays caused by an overhead wiring issue. The problem occurred overnight and affected the T1 North Shore Line, particularly between Gordon and Chatswood. Sydney Trains CEO Matthew Longland revealed that a counterweight, essential for maintaining the wires' tension, had failed.

Primary repairs were completed, but secondary work was still needed before the power was turned back on. Multiple lines, including the T1 and T9 Northern Line, experienced disruptions. Transport officials urged passengers to allow extra travel time and suggested alternative options like the Sydney Metro or normal scheduled buses.

The incident follows a similar issue two weeks prior, which caused major delays on Friday, August 14. Sydney Metro and some bus marshals were deployed to assist passengers at key stations. Changes were also made to the T1 Western Line and Central Coast line to reduce congestion.
