Trump's economic war with Iran needs a diplomatic off-ramp

The US has declared a sweeping economic campaign against Iran, aimed at making the financial burden of conflict too great for the country to bear. The measures are expected to target nations trading with Tehran, entities that assist Iran in circumventing sanctions, Iran's financial institutions, and its oil exports. Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and spokesman Esmail Baghaei, have dismissed the threat, stating that Iran has faced similar sanctions before and will not be subdued by them.

The economic impact of the ongoing war and US-imposed naval blockade has already caused significant damage to Iran's infrastructure and industries, with losses estimated at $270 billion. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for an end to the conflict while Iran still holds any leverage. Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf emphasized that military strength alone cannot sustain a nation if the populace is suffering from hunger and lacks economic growth.

These remarks indicate that senior Iranian officials may realize the economic strain of the war and the urgency to find a resolution.

Iran's economy was already in a precarious state before the war due to corruption, mismanagement, and a focus on supporting proxy wars abroad rather than improving the lives of its citizens. However, the current situation has been exacerbated by Iran's aggressive actions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have forced other countries to seek alternative trade routes and pipelines. The UAE has already suspended trade with Iran following the detection of ballistic missiles heading towards maritime navigation in the region.

The US should not view economic warfare as an end goal but rather as a tool to be employed strategically. Iran's economy was already struggling prior to the war, and the recent sanctions have only made matters worse. Offering economic incentives, such as phased sanctions relief and renewed access to trade and finance, could encourage Iran to return to serious negotiations.

With a limited window for a diplomatic solution, time is of the essence for the US to pursue a diplomatic off-ramp and avoid making economic warfare an irreversible outcome.
