Trump's economic war with Iran needs a diplomatic off-ramp

Last week, President Donald Trump announced a severe economic campaign against Iran, aimed at making the confrontation financially untenable for the Iranian government as the conflict enters its sixth month. The measures are expected to target nations trading with Iran, entities aiding its evasion of sanctions, their banking system, and oil exports.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reminded the world that the US is familiar with this cycle of sanctions. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, criticized the duplicity of Trump's economic declaration. Despite Iran's defiant stance, the economy has already faced significant challenges due to the war and the US-imposed naval blockade, with losses estimated at $270 billion.

President Masoud Pezeshkian called for an end to the conflict while Iran still holds leverage, while the Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that military might alone cannot sustain a nation without economic growth. These comments reveal that certain senior officials in Iran are starting to realize that the war is becoming economically unsustainable.

The US should capitalize on this concern instead of exacerbating it. It is crucial to note that Iran's economy was already struggling before the war and the recent sanctions. Corruption, mismanagement, and the misuse of funds for proxy wars have long contributed to the economic hardships and poor quality of life. However, the current situation is exacerbated by Iran's aggressive actions in the Strait of Hormuz, including laying sea mines and attacking ships, which has forced countries to find alternative routes and pipelines for trade.

The UAE has suspended trade with Iran following the detection of ballistic missiles threatening maritime navigation. The US should utilize both pressure and incentives in its approach. It has previously indicated what Iran could gain from engaging in serious negotiations: phased sanctions relief, restored trade and financial access, and a path towards economic normalization in exchange for security commitments. There is a limited window for achieving a diplomatic resolution, and time is running out.
