Today in Korean history

On this day in Korean history, various significant events have taken place.

In 1936, the Dong-A Ilbo, a prominent Korean newspaper, featured a photo of marathon gold medalist Sohn Kee-chung wearing a Japanese flag on his chest, despite Korea being a Japanese colony. The newspaper was later shut down by the Japanese regime, but reopened after firing the responsible journalist and publishing an apology.

In 1948, North Korea held its first general election, while South Korea had already done so in May of the same year.

In 1999, the Ministry of Information and Communication revealed that over 20 million South Koreans owned mobile phones, highlighting the growing popularity and importance of mobile technology in the country.

In 2000, the government released a list of 63 prisoners of conscience, who had been jailed during the 1950-53 Korean War for refusing to accept South Korea as their home. They were transported to North Korea in September as part of an inter-Korean summit agreement to promote reunification and cooperation.

In 2008, President Lee Myung-bak met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Seoul, urging Beijing to refrain from forcibly repatriating North Korean defectors, considering their human rights.

In 2009, South Korea's inaugural space rocket attempted to launch a scientific satellite, but unfortunately failed to reach orbit.

On this day in 2015, South and North Korea reached a historic agreement to defuse heightened tensions after days of intense high-level talks. Pyongyang expressed regret for a prior land mine attack and pledged to work towards ending provocations.

In 2017, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong received a five-year prison sentence for bribery, embezzlement, and other charges related to a massive corruption scandal that led to the resignation of former President Park Geun-hye. Lee was released from prison in February 2018 after an appellate court reduced his sentence to 2.5 years, with a four-year stay of execution.

Finally, on this day in 2018, the unified Korean canoeing team secured a historic bronze medal in the women's 200-meter dragon boat race at the 18th Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia. This marked the first time a joint South-North Korean team had won a medal at an international multi-sport competition.
