TMC moves SC against delay in disqualification of 20 rebel MPs

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court for an urgent decision on the disqualification proceedings against 20 rebel MPs. The hearing is set to take place on Tuesday, with Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Bagchi and Mohana scheduled to hear the case. TMC's Abhishek Banerjee has challenged the delay in the Speaker's decision, arguing that the 20 MPs were elected on the party's symbol and their alignment with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) constitutes disqualification under anti-defection provisions.

The 20 named MPs include Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Prasun Banerjee, among others. The NCPI-rebel MPs have countered that their move was a valid merger, and have maintained that they were treated as an NCPI group in Parliament. The political realignment in West Bengal post the TMC's defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections is also believed to have influenced this case.
