TGHRC expresses concern over school infra in State

The Telangana Human Rights Commission has urged urgent action to enhance school infrastructure and essential facilities in government schools throughout the state. This recommendation emerged from the Commission's August 3 suo motu inquiry into media accounts of students studying under trees, in verandahs, and communal spaces due to insufficient classrooms and amenities.

Districts such as Adilabad, Jangaon, Nalgonda, and Suryapet reported issues ranging from decayed classrooms to repairs pending and a lack of toilets. In Nalgonda's Vootkur village, temporary arrangements were made for students to study under trees while their damaged tin-roof classrooms were repaired after heavy rains. The Commission stated that these shortcomings jeopardize students' safety, health, dignity, and education, noting that Article 21 A guarantees their right to a safe and conducive learning environment.

Consequently, the Commission directed the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department to collect reports from all District Educational Officers and to inform the Chief Secretary about the steps taken to address these concerns within six months.
