Trump threatens 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks amid trade row

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he intends to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts, steel, and certain electronic goods to 50% from January 1, 2027, amid escalating tensions in the trade dispute between the United States and Canada. The new tariffs will apply to approximately 5.5% of Canadian goods entering the US, valued at around $20 billion.

These products include items ranging from hockey sticks to cement. Trump claimed that Canada has been "ripping off the United States of America for years" and stated that "we don't need Canada, they need us." The current US tariff on Canadian automobiles stands at 25%, while imported steel generally attracts a 50% duty. Canada retaliated against the US on Saturday, imposing retaliatory tariffs on US steel, dairy industries, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, set to take effect on September 8.

The White House accused Canada of "discriminatory treatment" of US alcohol, automobile, and dairy products. Trump had initially delayed the implementation of the tariffs by three days to allow for continued negotiations. Canadian negotiator Dominic LeBlanc held extensive discussions with US Trade Representative Jamie Johansson Greer on Thursday and Friday, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.

Greer stated that the US administration had offered to eliminate a 10% tariff on softwood lumber and reduce the 25% automobile tariff, along with cutting tariffs on most Canadian steel from 50% to 25%. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that he had suspended trade negotiations with the US. The US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA), which Trump has declined to renew in its current form, will also require further negotiations between the neighbors.
