Swan's assistant takes-over as Essendon coach

Mark McVeigh has been appointed as the new coach of the struggling Melbourne-based Australian Rules football club, Essendon, as of the latest club statement. This appointment was made unanimously by the club's board, following a season that marked Essendon's worst performance in the club's history. The club president, Andrew Welsh, confirmed that the decision to appoint McVeigh was based on an extensive and deliberate selection process.

McVeigh, who is 45 years old, is a former Essendon player as well as an assistant coach for Sydney. He was chosen over other candidates, including former Essendon great, James Hird, as well as Jaymie Graham and Murray Davis. McVeigh would take over as the senior coach immediately, according to the club's statement. The official announcement was made a day after Essendon's narrow loss to Port Adelaide, a result that signaled the club's continued struggles.

The search for a new coach has been a contentious issue, with opinions divided on whether James Hird should return to the role. Brad Scott was sacked on May 25, and Dean Solomon served as an interim coach for the remainder of the season. Solomon's efforts were not enough to secure a better result, contributing to Essendon's poor season which concluded with a 10-point defeat to Port Adelaide on Sunday.

Welsh, who played alongside McVeigh and Hird during his time at Essendon, expressed confidence in the chosen candidate. "Mark was clearly the best candidate for what this role demands," Welsh said, emphasizing the club's commitment to building a successful era for Essendon. The club aims to play finals, win finals, and compete for premierships.

McVeigh, who has returned to the club on a three-year contract after a period away, including a stint as an assistant coach at Greater Western Sydney Giants, reiterated the club's focus on standards, actions, and consistent effort.
