PH leaders hold talks as Melaka election plans take shape

Election director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari met Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on August 23, 2026, as negotiations for the upcoming Melaka election continue. PH communications director Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the meeting but declined to disclose the discussed topics.

Fahmi stated that PH leaders had been holding a series of meetings over the past two days, without providing further details. He was not informed whether the Melaka election or seat negotiations were among the matters discussed.

Anwar had previously announced that PH's election committee, headed by Amirudin, would look into potential cooperation with BN for the Melaka polls. Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, PH secretary-general and secretary of the committee, also hinted at the possibility of a meeting with Melaka BN chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to discuss cooperation ahead of the state election.

Fahmi added that PH's strategy following the recent PKR congress in Melaka would involve reinforcing the coalition's existing support while reaching out to former leaders and influential figures. Anwar emphasized during the congress that PH should not solely focus on bringing back the old guard, but also on uniting the full strength of the coalition.

Strengthening ties with former leaders like Tian Chua and Dr Xavier, as well as expanding the coalition's support base, were among the approaches PH planned to adopt for the Melaka polls.
