Nawaz consults leaders on AJK govt formation

PML-N President Nawaz Sharif convened a party meeting to discuss the formation of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government and potential candidates for the prime ministerial position. The meeting also addressed the country's broader political situation, the health of PTI founder Imran Khan, and recent Supreme Court rulings. Two PML-N leaders, Shah Ghulam Qadir and Tariq Farooq, were identified as the leading contenders for the top office.

The party finalized its strategy for reserving seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly, where six candidates are competing for five women's constituencies. The meeting expressed full confidence in the leadership of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Six women candidates, representing the PML-N, PPP, and independents, will compete for the reserved seats.

The Election Commission finalised the list of candidates on Sunday, with seven initially filing for the five seats, although PPP candidate Shaheen Kosar Dar dropped out on the day designated for withdrawals. The incoming AJK government will prioritize improving law and order, revitalising development efforts, and formulating comprehensive policies for the welfare of the population.

The AJK assembly is set to convene for its first session on Monday, with newly elected members swearing in after their election results are announced.
