NASA prepares the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for a historic launch

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, set to become NASA's next great observatory, is currently undergoing final preparations for its upcoming launch from Florida's Kennedy Space Center. Scheduled to lift off no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 30, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, the Roman Space Telescope will take on the monumental task of uncovering some of the universe's most profound mysteries.

With its primary mission focusing on dark energy, exoplanets, and the physics of distant stars, the Roman Space Telescope will undoubtedly lead humanity's next generation of astronomical discoveries. To ensure a successful mission, the telescope has spent weeks undergoing rigorous launch preparations at Kennedy Space Center.

Recently, technicians loaded the observatory with 290 gallons (1,100 liters) of hydrazine fuel on July 25, followed by its attachment to the payload adapter in early August. In preparation for the upcoming launch, Roman was encapsulated inside Falcon Heavy's payload fairing and successfully completed a full launch-day dress rehearsal on August 20.

Following the mission's Flight Readiness Review on August 21, NASA, SpaceX, and Roman mission managers formally cleared the observatory to begin its final launch preparations. Next, the telescope, encased in its payload fairings, will be transported to SpaceX's hangar at Launch Complex-39A, where it will be attached to the Falcon Heavy rocket before being rolled out to the pad for launch later this week.
