Indian EVMs not connected to internet, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi: CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar clarified on Monday (August 24, 2026) that Indian electronic voting machines (EVMs) do not feature internet, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi connectivity. During a two-day visit to Lucknow, Kumar interacted with students at the historic Colvin Taluqdars’ College, discussing India’s democratic system, the electoral process, EVM reliability, and the importance of young voters.

He emphasized that these EVMs, manufactured by public sector companies, are not connected to the internet or any wireless technologies. Kumar urged students to verify sources and authenticity of information, particularly in the age of social media. Reflecting on his own student days in 1979, he recalled the pivotal role of his teachers and school in his journey.

He shared that his mother's wish and attachment to India motivated him to pursue public service, leading him to clear the civil services examination and begin his career in the Kerala cadre of the Indian Administrative Service. Kumar highlighted the massive scale of India's electoral exercise, with around 100 crore voters, and stressed the importance of young people actively engaging in the democratic process.

He emphasized that Article 326 of the Constitution encourages citizens aged 18 and above to register as voters, and urged them to not only vote but also motivate their family and peers to participate in elections. Kumar strongly asserted that young people are the most vital force behind India’s democratic future; their informed participation strengthens democracy.
