Pocock condemns ‘absurd’ delay that could leave gambling logos on sports jerseys until 2032

Independent senator David Pocock has criticized the Albanese government for undermining its own promise to separate gambling from sports. The delay in removing betting company logos from professional jerseys until 2031 has drawn Pocock's sharp response, as the transition period may keep the branding in place for over five years.

This situation is described by Pocock as "absurd" and incompatible with the government's goal of breaking the nexus between gambling and sport. The government claims the transition is intended to balance reforms with existing commercial agreements. Communications minister Anika Wells acknowledged that one club's sponsorship deal extends until 2031, stating that clubs must end their arrangements at the earliest opportunity.

This controversy arises from a broader package of gambling advertising reforms, which includes a national opt-out register. However, critics argue that the legislation fails to adequately protect children from wagering advertising and falls short of comprehensive recommendations by a previous parliamentary inquiry.
