‘If I speak, BNI will call me’ – Afenyo-Markin alleges intimidation of NPP MPs

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that the government is using investigations by state agencies to intimidate and silence opposition MPs in Ghana's Parliament. Speaking on Joy News' The Probe, Afenyo-Markin claimed that some of his colleagues are now hesitant to voice their opinions forcefully in Parliament, fearing they may be invited by the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) to be questioned.

The minority leader stated that this intimidation has become a significant challenge for the Minority party. He did not name the specific MPs involved but said that several have expressed their concerns to the Minority leadership. Afenyo-Markin insisted that his criticism is not about opposing accountability but about the excessive use of investigations against political opponents.

He cited an instance where an MP was concerned about being questioned by the BNI, fearing a phone call from them. Despite the alleged intimidation, Afenyo-Markin reiterated that the Minority party is not opposed to investigating former public officials when necessary. He also rejected suggestions that his criticism constitutes a threat against the government, emphasizing that his concern is about the precedent such conduct could set when political power shifts.

Afenyo-Markin urged the government to focus on delivering on its promises and addressing the country's economic challenges instead of targeting the opposition.
