‘Tag NPP with corruption, silence the opposition’ – Afenyo-Markin accuses govt of intimidation strategy

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the government of using investigations as an intimidation tactic to silence opposition MPs. Speaking on Joy News’ The Probe, he stated that NPP MPs are being investigated over allegations that are not serious. Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over MPs fearing that speaking forcefully in Parliament might lead to them being summoned by the Business and Investment (BNI) agency.

He cited an instance where an MP reportedly backed out of a parliamentary statement after learning he had been asked to report to the BNI. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that while accountability is necessary, it should not be done in a way that intimidates individuals. He accused the government of diverting attention from its own governance issues by targeting the opposition with investigations, alleging that this strategy aims to link the NPP with corruption.

Afenyo-Markin warned that such tactics could lead to a cycle of political retaliation and suggested that governments should focus on their mandate and economic challenges rather than targeting opponents.
