HK, mainland 'seriously impressive' in broadcasting

Ahmed Nadeem, secretary-general of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, expressed high praise for the broadcast expertise in both Hong Kong and mainland China on Monday. He deemed their technological proficiency as "seriously impressive", highlighting how it would elevate the quality of broadcasts across the region. During a segment on RTHK's Backchat programme, Nadeem pointed out that China's state broadcasters have adopted cutting-edge technology throughout the entire broadcasting process, a significant departure from conventional methods.

As an illustrative example, he referenced China Central Television (CCTV), noting that the speed of transformation in China is markedly different from countries still adhering to outdated broadcasting infrastructures like Bangladesh and Pakistan. "If you go to countries like Bangladesh or Pakistan, you still see the old traditional set-ups," Nadeem remarked.

"In mainland China, the level of change you see from traditional broadcasting set-ups to those [countries] is remarkable." The Hong Kong broadcaster, Nadeem further pointed out, excels in technology utilization, content creation, and development. Their broadcasters not only comprehend international training concepts but also actively implement them in their day-to-day operations.

Nadeem emphasized that the approaches of Hong Kong and mainland China in broadcasting and media production present an invaluable learning opportunity for other regions. He underscored that this expertise could prove beneficial for underdeveloped broadcasting markets within the Asia-Pacific region. Nadeem stressed the importance of collaboration, as broadcasters face stiff competition from global streaming platforms and artificial intelligence.

He reiterated that traditional broadcasters possess substantial assets such as extensive archives, production skills, and strong public trust, which can be fortified through regional cooperation.
