The researchers discovered that exposure to either lead or Aβ peptides individually disrupted lysosomal function. Yet, when both were present simultaneously, the damage was significantly more pronounced, leading to reduced cell survival, altered acidic environments essential for normal lysosomal function, and structural damage to lysosomes.

Moreover, the lysosomal membranes became unstable and more permeable, potentially allowing harmful enzymes to escape into the cell and exacerbate cellular damage. These findings suggest that environmental lead exposure could exacerbate the cellular stress caused by Aβ, making nerve cells more susceptible to injury.
