Editorial: Checking Arbitrary Charging Of Transport Fares Must Go Beyond Crackdowns

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is taking decisive action to curb unfair hikes in public transport fares, moving beyond mere crackdowns. The city's officials have increased their presence in the Central Business District, focusing on trotro, taxi and ride-hailing operators who exceed officially approved rates, especially during peak traffic times.

AMA Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has issued warnings that fare violations lead to penalties. This move follows numerous complaints about inflated fares, with July's Nungua-Accra route charges soaring to GH¢20 from the usual GH¢6. The AMA's efforts are lauded for addressing economic fairness amid budget constraints. The 2017 Transport Regulations prohibit fare hikes beyond Assembly-approved levels.

However, enforcement must balance drivers' operational costs with commuters' fairness. AMA must establish clear fare charts, reporting mechanisms, and enforce sanctions against repeat offenders. The goal is to establish a balanced transport system where both parties are treated fairly.
